NewsAnnouncements

  • Each student must read a non-fiction book about a historical event or read a biography or a teacher-approved historical fiction book each six weeks. The book must be an AR testing book. The student will take an AR test and ask me to print out a report. The report will be taken to Coach Hurst, 6th grade Social Studies teacher. The AR test grade will be a Social Studies grade. The activity makes it necessary for students to read non-fiction literature. This is especially helpful in preparing for the TAKS Reading test, but most importantly, the students learn about history.

  • Sixth Grade Reading Course Syllabus 2010-2011 E-Mail: osborneb@agisd.com Conference Time:1:58-2:43 Phone: 903-768-2473 Grading Procedure: Daily work -- 40%, Tests -- 40%, Six Weeks Test -- 20%. It will be very helpful for an account to be set up through the Alba-Golden ISD website for grades to be monitored and to help you to be aware of any late or missing work. This account can be set up by going to www.agisd.com and click on the TxConnect Portal or www.agisd2.com and clicking on Grades. Most homework for this class will be work that is not finished during our class period. Occasionally, students will be assigned to read at home. This is very important to do so that you can participate in discussions and activities based on what was read the night before. Absences: The number of days a student is absent is the number of days that make-up work is due. For example, if a student is absent for 2 days, he or she has 2 days to complete work that was missed. Students who have unexcused absences will not be allowed to make up the work and will receive a 0 for the work due the day or days they were absent. This is explained in the student handbook. It is the responsibility of the students to bring an admit slip to the teacher to be signed and to ask for assignments and class work that was missed while the student was absent. Admit slips will be given in the attendance office and must be taken care of before Enrichment period. Late Work: All homework is due at the beginning of the class the following day. If a paper is turned in 1 day late, 15 points will be deducted from the grade. If a paper is turned in 2 days late, 30 points will be deducted from the grade. After the second day, any assignments not turned in will receive a 0 for the grade. Class Notes: Students are responsible for taking notes on information given in class. These notes should be placed in a binder, folder, or spiral notebook used only for reading class. Binder or Folder: Each student is required to have a 1inch binder or folder with brads for organizing papers. The course syllabus, book report information, and the policy for Texas Bluebonnet books must be kept in the binder or in the brads of the folder all year. Information, assignments, vocabulary, notes, tests, daily papers and AR/STAR testing information must be kept in this binder or folder. It is important to keep all paperwork and do not clean out this folder until you have been asked to do so. Novels: This year we will be reading several novels. You are responsible for keeping up with assigned reading and any assignments given over the novel . You will also be required to take the AR test over the novels we study and the grade you earn will be a test grade. If the novel is lost or destroyed, the student will be required to purchase a replacement. Students cannot take an AR test over a novel that we read in class until he or she has taken at least 1 AR test over a library book for that six weeks. In other words, a student cannot get all AR points over books that are read together as a class. Textbook: You will be assigned a textbook for class. This book must be brought to class each day. The book must be covered at all times. Paper book covers or cloth book covers can be used. Any damaged or lost textbook will have to be paid for by the student. Some stories from the textbook might be AR tests. If so, the AR test can be taken after the class has read the story. However, the same rule for taking an AR test over novels read together will apply to stories read together from the textbook. Accelerated Reader: Your grade in Accelerated Reader will count as the six week test grade each six weeks in Reading. Independent reading is crucial to develop reading fluency and comprehension, as well as to increase vocabulary. Research has proven that the more time a student spends reading independently, the better the student will score on the Reading TAKS test. The STAR reading test will be given at the beginning of the year and it will determine what level of independent reading a student is able to read and comprehend. All books from the library that a student checks out should be very near this independent level. One exception to this is if a student scores extremely high on the STAR test. The student and I will determine whether books on a very high level match the interest or maturity level of the student. It is my goal for the independent reading level of each student to increase throughout the year. Periodically, we will retake the STAR test and independent levels for reading will be adjusted. Points are as follows:1--76, 2--77, 3--78, 4--79, 5--80, 6--81, 7--82, 8--83, 9--84, 10--85, 11--86, 12--87, 13--88, 14--89, 15--90, 16--91, 17--92, 18--93, 19--94, 20--95, 21--96, 22--97, 23--98, 24--99, 25--100 Students are not allowed to refer to the book for information while they are taking an AR test. Students should bring their AR book to class everyday. AR can be read after work is completed or if independent reading time is given. You must have your student ID card to check out a book in the library. It is your responsibility to make sure that you always have your card with you. If it is misplaced, a new card will be made for you for $3. If you lose your card, you need to get a new one made quickly so that you can continue to check out library books as needed. * If a student scores below grade level on the STAR reading test, the AR points that are required may be modified. Book Report: A book report about a Texas Bluebonnet Nominated Book is due before the end of each six weeks. These books will be available in the library and are on different levels. The Bluebonnet book is the only exception to the rule about reading books around your independent reading level. You can choose any of these books to read and report on. If it is much higher than your independent level, I will need to give you permission to read the book. Many times, students put this assignment off until the very end of the six weeks and then do not allow time for reading the book or for writing a complete book report. It will be in your best interest to do this assignment early in the six weeks. I will not accept a late book report after you have been given six weeks to do this assignment. Information on what needs to be contained in the book report is on another paper and will need to be kept in your folder to refer to each six weeks. You can start the year off with a grade of 100 by having this paper read and signed by a parent or guardian and put it in your folder. You will need to show it to me on Aug. 24th to receive this bonus grade.

  • Texas Bluebonnet Award Books You are required to read at least 1 Bluebonnet Book each 6 weeks. You may read more if you choose. The Bluebonnet Books are AR books and will count toward your AR points. You must take an AR test over the Bluebonnet Book. You must write a book report for the Bluebonnet Book that you read. This report will count as a test grade. You will be given information about what should be included in this report and it should be kept in your folder/binder. Please do not wait until the last week of the 6 weeks to read your book and do the report because you may find it difficult to check out a Bluebonnet Book at that time. You know that a report is due during each six weeks, therefore, late reports will not be accepted and you will receive a grade of zer0 for the test grade. You will be given a list of the Bluebonnet Books to keep in your notebook in the AR section. This will help you keep up with which Bluebonnet Books you have already read. Each student who has read at least 5 Bluebonnet Books by January will get to vote with other students in the state to determine the winner of the Bluebonnet Award.

  • Book Report Requirements 6th Grade 2010-2011 This must be written with each section being a new paragraph. Do not number your paragraphs.
